The Athletes’ Voice: Engineering My Own Path

As a college athlete, my journey has been anything but conventional. While I have a deep passion for football, I’ve always known that I’m much more than just an athlete.

I have a strong desire to achieve greatness both on and off the field, which is why I chose to pursue my other passion: electrical engineering. Although I might not be your typical football player, I take great pride in that.

I’ve always been on my own path, and I’m determined to continue on it.

Setting A New Path

In high school, I attended two different schools at the same time. I’d go to one school for academics and the other for football, and I was one of the first students from my schools to pursue academics and athletics in college.

It was uncharted territory, but I embraced it and helped pave the way for future student-athletes.

When it came time to choose a college, I had several options. However, the COVID-19 pandemic complicated the recruitment process. That’s when I discovered Liberty University.

As a Christian and faith-based school, Liberty aligned with my values. I took a visit to Liberty, and I was drawn to the campus, the people, and the engineering school.

It just felt right, and that’s how I ended up at Liberty.

A Non-Traditional Path

My journey at Liberty has been far from ordinary.

Due to the timing of my recruitment and the COVID-19 situation, I wasn’t able to join the football team right away. The coaching staff suggested I focus on academics for the first semester, and they would bring me on in the spring.

I embraced this opportunity and dedicated myself to my engineering studies. However, things took a turn when the coaching staff changed, and I found myself in a state of uncertainty once again. But I didn’t let that deter me.

I continued to prioritize my education and worked towards establishing myself in the engineering field. What sets me apart from other college athletes is my dual focus on football and engineering. I’m not just a football player; I’m also an electrical engineering student. I’ve always been set apart in both arenas.

In the engineering world, I stand out because I can communicate, articulate a vision, and lead people, which are skills that I developed through playing football. And in the football world, I bring a unique perspective to the playbook, viewing it through a mathematical lens, which enhances my performance on the field.

I’ve always believed that education is the key to a successful future. Many athletes rely solely on their sport to carry them through school, but I’ve always taken my education seriously. It’s what will sustain me in the long run, regardless of what happens with football. I want to stress the importance of pursuing education because it will take you further than any sport ever could.

Entrepreneurial Spirit

In addition to my studies and football, I’ve also embraced my entrepreneurial spirit.

I have my own apparel brand called Shop MMJR, which takes advantage of my name, image, and likeness. It’s a faith-based brand, and we create clothing that reflects those values.

I’m also involved in content creation and streaming, using my platform to impact people by being my authentic self. Looking ahead, I have big dreams and aspirations. I hope to start my own power company one day, focusing on maintaining and modernizing the power grid.

As an electrical engineer, I understand the importance of a reliable and efficient power system, and I want to use my knowledge to make a difference in that field. I believe that football can provide me with the platform and resources to pursue these goals and create an impact.

Throughout my journey, faith has played a significant role. It’s not just one isolated moment but a series of small moments that have shaped my connection with God.

In times of uncertainty, such as when the coaching staff at Liberty changed, or when I entered the transfer portal, I relied on my faith to guide me.

I’ve always been different, but I’ve embraced it and used it to my advantage. I want to inspire others to pursue their education, follow their passions, and never be afraid to be different. Education and personal growth can sustain and propel athletes beyond their sports careers, and I’m living proof of that belief.
